Artist Statement

Gebrelwa Worku is a painter whose work explores the notion of value and its connection to human identity, particularly through clothing and fabric. Her artistic journey began in childhood, inspired by her father, Worku Mamo, one of Ethiopia’s most prominent painters. Watching him work, she learned to observe, imitate, and engage with the creative process, which eventually shaped her own artistic voice.

Fabrics hold a deep resonance for Gebrelwa—they are both material and metaphor. She collects discarded fabrics from studios, cultural clothing workshops, and occasionally purchases new ones, which she colors, manipulates, and sews to express ideas about identity, social perception, and the value attributed to appearances. Bright and bold colors often take center stage in her work, drawing the viewer’s attention and representing the human presence she seeks to emphasize. At times, she blurs the background to ensure that the focus remains on the person rather than the material, highlighting the tension between societal value placed on objects versus individuals.

Her process is both experimental and intentional: by coloring her own fabrics, she gains control over hue, texture, and expression, moving beyond the limitations of commercially available materials. She layers, sews, and sometimes burns fabrics to translate ideas into visual form, merging discarded and new textiles to create balance and dialogue between opposites—what society overlooks and what it celebrates. Everyday observations and community encounters serve as constant sources of inspiration, informing the motifs, textures, and compositions in her work.

Artist Biography

Gebrelwa Worku was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1997. She earned her BA in Fine Arts from Addis Ababa University, Alle School of Fine Arts and Design in 2023. In addition, she holds a diploma in Graphic Design from Entoto Polytechnic College.

Gebrelwa works full-time as a studio artist, exploring themes of identity, value, and human perception through her innovative use of fabrics. Inspired by her father, the prominent Ethiopian painter Worku Mamo, she began creating art at a young age, learning by observing and imitating his practice. Fabrics are central to her work, both as material and metaphor—collected, colored, sewn, and sometimes burned to create textures and compositions that reflect the tension between material worth and human value.

She has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Ethiopia and abroad, including the Embassy of Italy (2024), Fendka Cultural Center (2024), World Bank Gallery (2024), Embassy of France (2023), Metropolitan Art Gallery (2023), Entoto Fine Art Center (2021), Entoto Polytechnic College (2019), and the National Theatre Art Gallery (2016). Her first solo exhibition will be presented at Artawi Gallery, showcasing her distinctive approach to fabric-based painting and the interplay of color, texture, and human-centered ideas.

የአርቲስት መግለጫ

ገብረልዋ ወርቁ ዋጋ እና ከሰው ማንነት ጋር ያለውን ግንኙነት፣ በተለይም በልብስና በጨርቃጨርቅ አማካኝነት የምትመረምር ሰዓሊ ነች። የኪነ ጥበብ ጉዞዋ የጀመረው ገና በልጅነቷ ሲሆን፣ መነሻዋም ከአባቷ፣ በኢትዮጵያ አንጋፋ ሰዓሊዎች አንዱ ከሆኑት ወርቁ ማሞ ነው። አባቷን እየተመለከተች በመስራት ሂደት፣ ከዚያም እያስመሰለች በመሳል በፈጠራው ሂደት ውስጥ መሳተፍን ተምራለች፤ ይህም በመጨረሻ የራሷን የኪነ ጥበብ ድምፅ እንዲቀርጽ አድርጓል።

ጨርቆች ለገብረልዋ ጥልቅ ትርጉም አላቸው—ቁሳቁስም ዘይቤም ናቸው። የሚጣሉ ጨርቆችን ከስቱዲዮዎች፣ ከባህላዊ ልብስ ወርክሾፖች ትሰበስባለች፣ አልፎ አልፎም አዲስ ትገዛለች። እነዚህን ጨርቆች ቀለም ትቀባለች፣ ትለውጣለች እንዲሁም ትሰፋለች። ይህንንም የምታደርገው ስለ ማንነት፣ ስለ ማህበራዊ አመለካከት እና ስለ መልክ/አካላዊ ገጽታ የሚሰጠውን ዋጋ በተመለከተ ያላትን ሀሳብ ለመግለጽ ነው። ደማቅና ጎላ ያሉ ቀለሞች ብዙ ጊዜ በስራዎቿ ውስጥ ማዕከላዊ ስፍራ የሚይዙ ሲሆን፣ የተመልካቹን ትኩረት በመሳብ እሷ ለማጉላት የምትፈልገውን የሰውን ማንነት ይወክላሉ። አንዳንዴም ትኩረቱ በቁሳቁስ ላይ ሳይሆን በሰውየው ላይ እንዲቆይ ለማድረግ፣ ከበስተጀርባ ያለውን በማደብዘዝ፣ ማህበረሰቡ ለቁሶች ከሚሰጠው ዋጋ እና ለግለሰቦች ከሚሰጠው ዋጋ መካከል ያለውን ልዩነት ትጠቁማለች።

የእሷ የስራ ሂደት የሙከራና የዓላማ ጥምረት ነው፡ የራሷን ጨርቆች በመቀባት፣ በቀለም አይነት፣ በስስነት/ሸካራነት እና በአገላለጽ ላይ እራስዋ የምታፈልገዉ አይነት ጨርቅ ታገኛለች፣ ይህም በገበያ ላይ ከሚቀርቡ ጨርቆች ገደብ በላይ እንድትሄድ ያስችላታል። ሀሳቦችን ወደ ምስላዊ መልክ ለመተርጎም ጨርቆችን ታደራርባለች፣ ትሰፋለች፣ አልፎ አልፎም ታቃጥላለች። በዚህም የተጣሉትንና አዳዲሶቹን ጨርቆች በማዋሃድ በተቃራኒዎች መካከል—ማህበረሰቡ ችላ በሚለው እና በሚያከብረው መካከል—ሚዛንና ውይይት ለመፍጠር ትጥራለች። የዕለት ተዕለት ምልከታዎችና የማህበረሰብ ግንኙነቶች ለስራዋ የመነሳሻ ምንጮች ሆነው ያገለግላሉ።  

ስለ አርቲስት  – ገብረልዋ ወርቁ

ገብረልዋ ወርቁ የተወለደችው በ1990 ዓ.ም. አዲስ አበባ፣ ኢትዮጵያ ነው። በ2023 ዓ.ም. ከአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ፣ አለ የኪነ ጥበብና ዲዛይን ትምህርት ቤት የኪነ ጥበብ (Fine Arts) የባችለር ዲግሪ አግኝታለች። በተጨማሪም ከእንጦጦ ፖሊቴክኒክ ኮሌጅ በግራፊክ ዲዛይን ዲፕሎማ አላት።

ገብረልዋ ሙሉ ጊዜዋን በስቱዲዮ አርቲስትነት በመስራት፣ ስለ ማንነት፣ ዋጋ እና የሰዎች አመለካከት የሚሉትን ጭብጦች በጨርቃጨርቅ አጠቃቀምዋ ትመረምራለች። በአባቷ፣ በታዋቂው ኢትዮጵያዊ ሰዓሊ ወርቁ ማሞ ተነሳሽነት፣ ገና በወጣትነት ዕድሜዋ ጥበብን መፍጠር የጀመረች ሲሆን፣ የእሱን ስራ በመመልከት እና በመስራት ተምራለች። ጨርቆች ለሥራዋ ማዕከላዊ ናቸው፤ ቁሳቁስም ዘይቤም ናቸው—የሚሰበሰቡ፣ ቀለም የሚቀቡ፣ የሚሰፉ እና አንዳንዴም የሚቃጠሉ ሲሆን፣ ይህም በቁሳዊ ዋጋና በሰው ዋጋ መካከል ያለውን ልዩነት የሚያንጸባርቁናቸዉ።  

በኢትዮጵያና በውጭ አገር በተደረጉ በርካታ የጋራ ኤግዚቢሽኖች ላይ ተሳትፋለች፤ ከእነዚህም መካከል የጣልያን ኤምባሲ (2024)፣ የፈንድቃ ባህል ማዕከል (2024)፣ የዓለም ባንክ ጋለሪ (2024)፣ የፈረንሳይ ኤምባሲ (2023)፣ ሜትሮፖሊታን አርት ጋለሪ (2023)፣ እንጦጦ ፋይን አርት ሴንተር (2021)፣ እንጦጦ ፖሊቴክኒክ ኮሌጅ (2019)፣ እና የብሔራዊ ቲያትር አርት ጋለሪ (2016) ይገኙበታል። የመጀመሪያዋ የግል ኤግዚቢሽን በአርታዊ ጋለሪ ላይ እየቀረበ ሲሆን፣ ለጨርቅ-ተኮር ሥዕል ያላትን የተለየ አቀራረብና የቀለም፣ የሸካራነት እና በሰው ላይ ያተኮሩ ሀሳቦች መስተጋብርን ያሳያል።
