The Analog Film Public Lab is an emerging initiative by Artawi that aims to make film photography more accessible in Ethiopia by providing local film developing facilities and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

Film photography in Ethiopia exists within a fragmented ecosystem. Photographers working with analog processes often face significant challenges:

  • Lack of local film development facilities

  • High costs associated with sending film abroad

  • Long waiting times and logistical uncertainty

As a result, many photographers are discouraged from working with film, while visiting artists are unable to process their work locally.

What We Do?

Artawi is establishing a public-access film lab, beginning with black-and-white film development and expanding into color processing.

The lab will operate as both:

  • A practical service space for developing film

  • A learning environment for photographers interested in analog practices

Program Structure

  • Open developing sessions (pay-per-use)

  • Membership model for regular users

  • Guided sessions and technical support

  • Community-based knowledge exchange

Current Status

  • Black-and-white development setup in place

  • Initial informal sessions with local film photographers

  • Public program launching imminently

Future Vision

To build a fully equipped, sustainable public lab that supports analog photography as both a practice and an educational tool within Ethiopia.
