Ethiopian Photography Community

Overview

The Ethiopian Photography Community is a platform initiated and hosted by Artawi to connect photographers, encourage collaboration, and expand access to learning opportunities.

Background

Launched nearly two years ago, the community responds to the need for structured engagement among photographers in Ethiopia, a space where knowledge, experience, and resources can be shared across different levels of practice.

What We Do

The community organizes a range of programs that combine theory, practice, and exchange:

  • Workshops led by local and international photographers

  • Photowalks encouraging collective exploration and practice

  • Mentorship programs (one-on-one and group-based)

  • Artist talks and presentations

We actively collaborate with visiting photographers, integrating their presence into the local ecosystem through public programming.

Approach

Our programming emphasizes:

  • Both conceptual and technical development

  • Practical, hands-on learning

  • Peer exchange and long-term engagement

Impact

The community has created a growing network of photographers who are more actively producing work, engaging critically, and considering exhibition as part of their practice.
