Artist Statement

In his artistic practice, Mikiyas Abera explores the unseen narratives embedded within everyday life in his community in Addis Ababa. Drawing inspiration from the neighborhoods he lives in, his work reflects on the interconnected themes of memory, identity, and the relationship between people and place.

Working primarily with mixed media, Abera creates layered compositions that merge figurative portraiture with symbolic imagery. His paintings often begin with close observations of the individuals and environments around him, friends, neighbors, and familiar street scenes, captured through gestures, body language, and moments of daily life. These personal encounters serve as the foundation for visual narratives that reflect both intimate and collective experiences.

In the series Village Whispers, Abera combines acrylic painting with elements of contemporary street aesthetics, incorporating spray-painted patterns, repeating icons, and textured surfaces. Objects, architectural elements, and fragments of daily life appear alongside figures, suggesting that every material presence carries its own story and memory.

Through this approach, Abera constructs emotional landscapes where personal histories, cultural references, and social realities intersect. His work invites viewers to reflect on the quiet stories that shape communities and the enduring connections between people, memory, and the spaces they inhabit.

Artist Biography

Mikiyas Abera (b. Addis Ababa) is a multidisciplinary studio artist whose work navigates the intersection of social history and contemporary community life. His artistic foundation was built at the Teferi Mekonnen School (TMS), where he graduated nearly a decade ago, transitioning from a childhood passion for drawing cartoons and magazine illustrations into a sophisticated professional practice.

Based in Addis Ababa, Mikiyas draws inspiration from an eclectic range of sources, including historical archives, Time magazine, and the rhythmic movements of his immediate neighborhood. His style is characterized by a fluid, "mixed-media" approach, blending traditional acrylics with experimental spray-paint textures and wall-like patterns to mimic the environments of his subjects.

Mikiyas has become known for his ability to find the "spiritual in the everyday," often focusing on the struggles and triumphs of individuals within his village. His work has been featured in various creative circles in Ethiopia. He remains dedicated to illuminating the narratives of those who might otherwise be overlooked, turning personal memories into lasting visual property.

የአርቲስት መግለጫ

ሚኪያስ አበራ በስነ-ጥበብ ስራዎቹ ማህበረሰቡ በዕለት ተዕለት ሕይወት ውስጥ ተቀብረው የሚገኙ ድብቅ ትረካዎችን ይፈትሻል። በሚኖርባቸው ሰፈሮች ተነሳሽነት በመውሰድ፣ ስራዎቹ በትዝታ፣ በማንነት እንዲሁም በሰዎች እና በሚኖሩባቸው አካባቢዎች መካከል ያለውን የተሳሰረ ግንኙነት ያንጸባርቃሉ።

በዋናነት በተለያዩ የማቴሪያል አይነቶች (mixed media) የሚሰራው አበራ፣ የሰው ምስለ ስዕል (figurative portraiture) ከምልክታዊ ምስሎች ጋር በማዋሃድ የተነባበሩ ስራዎችን ይፈጥራል። የእርሱ ሥዕሎች ብዙውን ጊዜ የሚጀምሩት በዙሪያው ያሉ ግለሰቦችን እና አካባቢዎች ፣ ጓደኞቹን፣ ጎረቤቶቹን እና የታወቁ የጎዳና ላይ ትዕይንቶችን በትኩረት በመመልከት ሲሆን፣ ይህም በሰውነት እንቅስቃሴ፣ በአቀማመጥ እና በዕለት ተዕለት ሕይወት ቅጽበቶች ውስጥ ይገለጻል። እነዚህ ግላዊ ግንኙነቶች ግላዊ እና የጋራ ተሞክሮዎችን የሚያንፀባርቁ የእይታ ትረካዎች መሠረት ሆነው ያገለግላሉ።

"የመንደር ሽክሹክታ" (Village Whispers) በተሰኘው ተከታታይ ስራው፣ አበራ የአክሬሊክስ ቅብን ከዘመናዊዉ (street aesthetics) ጋር ያዋህዳል፤ በዚህም የስፕሬይ ቀለም ቅቦችን፣ ተደጋጋሚ ምልክቶችን እና ሸካራ ገጽታዎችን ይጠቀማል። ቁሶች፣ የሕንፃ አካላት እና የዕለት ተዕለት ሕይወት ስብርባሪዎች ከሰዎች ምስል ጎን ለጎን የሚታዩ ሲሆን፣ ይህም እያንዳንዱ ቁሳዊ መኖር የራሱ የሆነ ታሪክ እና ትዝታ እንዳለው ይጠቁማል።

በዚህ አቀራረብ አበራ ግላዊ ታሪኮች፣ ባህላዊ ዋቢዎች እና ማህበራዊ እውነታዎች የሚገናኙባቸውን ስሜታዊ ገጽታዎች ይገነባል። ስራዎቹ ተመልካቾች ማህበረሰቦችን በሚቀርጹ ረቂቅ ታሪኮች እና በሰዎች፣ በትዝታ እና በሚኖሩባቸው ቦታዎች መካከል ባለው ዘላቂ ትስስር ላይ እንዲያሰላስሉ ይጋብዛሉ።

የአርቲስት የህይወት ታሪክ

ሚኪያስ አበራ (በአዲስ አበባ የተወለደ) የማህበራዊ ታሪክ እና የዘመናዊ ማህበረሰብ ህይወት መገናኛ መንገዶችን የሚቃኝ ሁለገብ ስቱዲዮ አርቲስት ነው። የስነ-ጥበብ መሰረቱን ከዛሬ አስር አመት ገደማ በፊት በተፈሪ መኮንን ትምህርት ቤት (TMS) የጣለ ሲሆን፣ በልጅነቱ የነበረውን የካርቱን ስዕል እና የመጽሔት ስዕላዊ መግለጫዎችን የመሳል ፍላጎት ወደ ላቀ ሙያዊ ብቃት አሳድጓል።

አዲስ አበባ መቀመጫውን ያደረገው ሚኪያስ፣ ከታሪካዊ ሰነዶች፣ ከታይም (Time) መጽሔት እና ከአካባቢው ሰፈር እንቅስቃሴዎች መነሳሳትን ያገኛል። የእርሱ የአሳሳል ዘይቤ በፈሳሽ እና "ድብልቅ-ሚዲያ" አቀራረብ የሚታወቅ ሲሆን፣ ባህላዊ የአክሬሊክስ ቀለሞችን ከሙከራ የስፕሬይ ቀለም ሸካራነቶች እና የግድግዳ መሰል ቅቦች ጋር በማዋሃድ የገጸ-ባህሪያቱን መኖሪያ አካባቢ ይስላል።

ሚኪያስ በሰፈሩ ውስጥ ባሉ ግለሰቦች ተጋድሎ እና ድል ላይ በማተኮር ከተለመደዉ "የዕለት ተዕለት ሕይወት ውስጥ መንፈሳዊነትን" የማግኘት እና የማሳየት ችሎታው ይታወቃል። ስራዎቹ በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ በተለያዩ የፈጠራ መድረኮች ቀርበዋል። ግላዊ ትዝታዎችን ወደ ዘላቂ የእይታ ሀብት በመቀየር፣ ትኩረት ሊነፈጋቸው የሚችሉ ሰዎችን ታሪክ በስዕሉ ለማጉላት ቁርጠኛ ሆኖ ቀጥሏል።
